Hardtop’s anyone??
How many of you know what a Hardtop is??? Careful, you will give away your age. Sometimes we at Mercuryland need to know if your car is a 2 or 4 door Sedan or a 2 or 4 door Hardtop. It makes a big difference when we are talking door seals or glass.
I am surprised at how many people don’t know what a Hardtop is. But in their defence, Hardtops haven’t been made in a long time. I think Mercury quit the 4 door Hardtop in 1973 and the 2 door Hardtop in 1979 . They started making what they called the 4 door Pillared Hardtop (that’s another style we won’t get into) in 1969 which eventually replaced the 4 door Hardtop.
So, if you don’t know what a Hardtop is, how can you tell the difference from a Sedan? If you roll down all the windows, is there a bar between the front door window opening and rear door (4Dr) or quarter panel (2Dr)window opening? If all you have is a big open space with no dividing bar, then you have a Hardtop. If you open the door, is there a big heavy frame work around the glass that doesn’t move when you roll the window down? If there is, you have a Sedan. If there isn’t, you have a Hardtop.
That is about the easiest way I know to explain the difference. Mercury brought out the 2 door Hardtop in 1952. They brought out the 4 door Hardtop in 1956. Very pretty cars.
